DESCRIPTION: Small, round burls from the Heath Tree found primarily in the Mediterranean area. Briar burls are mostly sourced in Italy. These burls are great for carving & used a lot by the pipe makers. They polish very well and finish to a reddish brown.
BOTANICAL NAME: Erica Arborea
WORKING PROPERTIES: This is a very hard wood to work with hand or power tools. Can be polished to an excellent finish.
USES: Primarily used in making tobacco pipes. Can be used as decorative inlay or pen making.
OTHER NAMES: Heath, White Heath
JANKA HARDNESS: 960-1138 (sometimes seen it at 2000)
