DESCRIPTION: The wood ranges in color from a pale cream to a yellowish-brown or straw color with the sapwood & heartwood very similar. The heartwood will sometimes have nearly black markings that produced an attractive figure. The texture is moderately coarse with a grain that is usually straight, but on occasion can be irregular or interlocked.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Found from Sierra Leone to Angola & Zaire. It grows in rain & savanna forests & is also a favorite plantation species in West Africa.
BOTANICAL NAME: Terminalia superba
WORKING PROPERTIES: Easy to work with hand or power tools. It responds well to ordinary machining tools in all operations & works to produce clean smooth surfaces. It saws easily & has good gluing & nailing characteristics, as well as good veneering properties. It stains well & is suited to a variety of finishes.
USES: This wood is a very good tone wood & used a lot by the guitar makers. Limba veneer is popular for plywood, indoor joinery & outdoor joinery after protective treatment. Heartwood veneer is also used for highly decorative furniture & paneling.
